Ein Blick in die Zukunft – A glimpse into the future?
(Posted on 13/03/18)
Researching into the idiosyncrasies of New Year celebrations in Germany our IB class finds out that not only do they inexplicably watch ‘Dinner for One’ every year, a short comedy film from 1963 with British comedians Freddie Frinton and May Warden, but they also have a go at predicting the future with a piece of lead.
We decide this is intriguing enough to try out ourselves so we buy a ‘Bleigieβen’ kit from Amazon and after watching rather bemused a few minutes of the obligatory ‘Dinner for One’ to get us in the New Year mood we heat up the small pieces of lead over a candle as instructed and drop them into the cold water.
We have a few interesting shapes to analyse, a tree, a squid and an egg and are reliably informed by our instruction leaflet that this means we were due for personal growth (tree), should look on the bright side (squid) and should expect a baby (egg).
This was certainly quite a surprise to the young lady concerned but presumably this was a glimpse of a more distant horizon...
