Publication success for CIS chemist

Congratulations to our very own Dr Alex Lawrenson, whose research into antimalarial drugs has been published in a recent issue of the Journal of Molecular Modeling.
Nearly half the world’s population are at risk of malaria, which kills half a million people each year. The drug chloroquine is widely used to treat malaria, but there are many strains of malaria that are now resistant to chloroquine.
Working with the University of Liverpool, Alex developed statistically significant models that were able to predict the activity of drugs based on the structure of chloroquine. In addition, the research offered further understanding of how these drugs elicit their response. These finding will support future efforts to design new drugs to treat malaria.
