BTEC Sport Studies (Y12-13)

This course is the equivalent of 1 A level and is studied as part of the Career-Related Programme. This course is studied alongside 2 or 3 IB Diploma Courses and the CP Core.

Note: This course is taught at the Queen’s Park High campus next door, the rest of your programme courses will be taught at Chester International School. Learners will therefore benefit from all facilities across both sites.

What will I Study?

BTEC Sport covers an incredibly diverse and interesting range of topics. By the end of the two years you will have studied the anatomy and physiology of movement where you will learn about the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, various training methods and fitness testing. You will also look at individual practical sports performance and professional development in the sporting industry.

Candidates will study the following:

Anatomy & Physiology – Exam – 33.3%

Learners explore how the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems function and the fundamentals of the energy systems.

Fitness Training & Programming for Health, Sport & Wellbeing – Exam - 33.3%

Learners explore client screening and lifestyle assessment, fitness training methods and fitness programming to support improvements in a client’s health and wellbeing.

Professional Development in the Sports Industry – Coursework - 22%

Learners explore the knowledge and skills required for different career pathways in the sports industry. Learners will take part in, and reflect on, a personal skills audit, career action plan and practical interview assessment activities.

Practical Sports Performance – 22%

Learners study the skills, techniques, tactics and rules of selected sports through active participation in individual/team sports.

Students will enjoy a wide range of activities undertaken during the course, including:

Work Experience

Learners will be able to take advantage of short term and longer-term placements so they can ‘learn on the job’. A mandatory one-week work placement will also be arranged to gain an insight into the world of Sport. This essential part of the course has also proved to be of great benefit when applying for further education courses or paid employment. Many students have also found that it has broadened their horizons in terms of what they would like to do for their career after Sixth Form.

Progression

Often learners will select 2 or 3 of the following diploma courses to complement this option: IB Psychology, IB Biology, IB English, IB Environmental Science.

Sports Studies can lead to a range of exciting further study options such as Biomedical Science, Fitness Management, Nutritional Sciences, Gold Management and Sports Psychology, teaching and coaching, sports development, the leisure industry, recreational management, the health and fitness industry, professional sport, sport psychology, nutrition, physiotherapy and many others.. The specification is based on developing key skills for further careers in the sporting industry and provides an excellent foundation for students who wish to pursue careers in this area.
